MAC address
my Router has handy option to set desired MAC Address, which is very useful when ISP expects a special MAC address. Where the MAC address stored in router: does it stored in firmware itself, not burned-in chip?
I recently tested combined device, cable modem with WiFi, VoIP and Dect, unfortunately, there is no such handy option to set MAC address. Where the MAC address stored in cable modem and is there a practical way to implement the same option?
Plant Manager insists that 17 SNR is acceptable?
OK,
First off, I have an ongoing BBB complaint with this company for the last two weeks (detailing months of ongoing issues).
I just had the plant manager of my local cable company visit my house and pull up some data on his laptop of my signal to noise ratio. It looked something similar to a smokeping. At first, he insisted that all that mattered was this 'average' line that he was indicating. I said that that wasn't true & that the deviation within that time period mattered as well. i.e. There were many periods where the downstream SNR dropped to the lower to mid 20's. He insisted that only the average mattered.
I guess since I wouldn't drop the matter (& kept insisting that the deviation mattered as well), he claimed that my Motorola Surfboard 5100 was fine as long as the signal to noise ratios were above 17.
In effect, saying that if I had a constant 20 downstream SNR, I'd be perfectly OK. I said he was wrong. He said he had years of experience and that since I wasn't going to 'work with him', he was leaving (and presumably, never fixing my connection).
I've provided the BBB with the specs from Motorola's own website, but I'm unsure if they'll believe me over the guy with 'years of experience'. With the BBB mediation effort apparently going to fail, I've considered taking them to small claims court (in order to get a refund for several months service). Is there anything else I should consider?
Am I wrong, and 17 SNR *is* actually acceptable? lol. I don't see how that could be true, but.... you know, he does have years of experience.
Upload a telephone conversation
I would like to know if is possible upload a telephone conversation with a provider .
It's a legal conversation where I am directly part of the conversation about questions of the service and claims.
can you help me.
Best Regards
should i call brighthouse?
i use brighthouse for tv/internet/phone. brighthouse gave me an arris touchstone telephony modem. i've been using it for about 2 years with my linksys router. i use a cable splitter going to my modem and one tv for basic cable.
i can't exactly remember when it started, but it's been doing this for a while. it will randomly reboot itself and then within 30 seconds will be back to normal. it's random, but it usually happens when there is heavy internet traffic (e.g. torrenting, xbox live, etc.)
just today however, it's gotten worse. this morning i had to reset the modem and unplug it multiple times because when rebooting, it would stall on the Upstream LED and just keep blinking. whenever i play on xbox live now, the modem will reboot after about 5 minutes online. when it reboots, it get stuck on the upstream LED most of the time.
i've tried replacing the cable splitter also.
also, i installed a new motherboard a few months ago and it forced me to change my wireless frequency on my router because it kept interfering. my modem and router are right nect to my pc.

When will Moto SB5101 be end of life?
Just wondering since I own the Motorola SB5101 cable modem when it will reach it's end of life and need to be replaced, for the budget tier internet service with Comcast. I don't see it on the end of life list on the Comcast site yet, but just thinking ahead a bit. Thanks.
DOCSIS 3.0 CATV MODEM
OK I am having the CATV company supply all 3 services to my home CATV, Phone, and 50 mb/s internet.
I want to supply my own modem but not sure what brand and model to get or if what I want exist or not.
I want a modem so I can plug my PC directly into it via Ethernet, and I also want it to be wireless so I can use my laptop, Sony PS3, and any guest with laptops can access wireless.
Does such an animal exist?
Thank you.
CATV Modem & DVR
Well after 3 years with Dish Network and Verizon Network I am dumping them and going back to CATV for TV, Phone, and Internet.
I have CableOne as my service provider and would like to buy my own CATV modem for internet, and HD DVR rather than rent one from CableOne.
So is it possible and what should I look for?
Cable TV Censorship Question
I have noticed that when The Godfather is shown on AMC, that the heavier curse words are replaced with 'other' words (However the gory R-Rated Violence, is --always-- left in...).
The other day, on Turner Movie Classics, the movie A Bridge To Far was showing, and they definitely left in the "F" word.
How do I know in advance which networks are going to censor words and which networks are not. (I prefer that for watching Dramas on Cable, that NO words are censored from the original...).
What cable companies will remain all analog....?
What cable companies will remain all analog and will not change to digital?
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r25928927-Rant-I-thought-digital-service-was-everywhere.
I would consider moving to that town in the future.
EAS frequency question?
Does anyone know what frequency each cable company uses to broadcast their EAS?
I have a working theory, you could put something on the cable line to block the EAS signal from activating the box or cable card. It would be legal to block this from your home. This way it won't hijack recordings or lock up your box.
Baldwin Telecom Pricing
I will have fiber optic dropped to my house in the near future. The provider is Baldwin Telecom and the area is Hudson, WI.
Currently I pay $24.95 for 3mb DSL service. It's reliable and tests at about 2.5mb down. But that is the max I can get based on my distance from the station. Dang near everything in my house is Internet ready and those speeds are not enough to run my PCs, Ipad, Netflix, etc.
So in order to get 6mb down from Baldwin Telecom I would need to pay about $110/month. I'd have to pay $50/month to just get the same speeds I get with DSL.
I'm interested in how this pricing compares with other providers. It seems really expensive to me.
Thanks in advance.
How long can a fiber optic cord be from a house to the poll?
How long can a fiber optic cord be from a house to the poll or box be? I am thinking of switching services but the nearest pole is 500 ft. Will the new service even install my service? I am serious about the lengths to the poles. There is one that might be closer but I would say it is about 400 foot but in someones backyard.
Mod, if wrong forum please move.
Midcontinent ISP dropping my connection?
So here is a description of my problem. If I am utilizing a good chunk of my bandwidth (downloading games, torrents, patches, etc) my connection often drops me.
I have plugged directly into my cable mode, same problem. I had another cable modem and had Midcontinent activate it and still the same problem. I have changed Ethernet cables, uses two separate NICs and two separate computers as well.
This has been happening for approximately two weeks (we are having our digital transition, we just recently got new cable channels in HD and other things) but I am guessing it is my ISP? I can easily call them up and ask them if it is their side of things, but I rather avoid the run around if there is something else possibly wrong on my side.
Just what are they doing to the lines here?
The past couple of months I've been getting frequent outages, mainly because of the D3 upgrades going on I assume. My ISP is CableOne; I would've posted it in their forum but there seems to be more techsavvy cable internet people here (usually)..
Current:
Frequency 549000000 Hz
Signal To Noise Ratio 33.4 dB
Power Level -1.0 dBmV
Channel ID 1
Frequency 30500000 Hz
Power 34.2 dBmV
Before:
Downstream Value
Frequency 543000000 Hz
Signal To Noise Ratio 38.3 dB
Power Level 4.1 dBmV
Channel ID 1
Frequency 30500000 Hz
Power 34.7 dBmV
It's been like this for about 4-5 days now. 2-way splitter connected directly to the drop outside. Why the big drop in SNR and output power? My concern is that the SNR is getting lower and lower every day and I haven't touched anything on my side of things. No packet loss or slow speeds as of yet.

CableOne 10m/1m
rant-I hate the Digital transition
I got the DTA's today. I just realized what a major pain it is going to be recording programs on a vcr or even a dvr. I could upgrade to a dvr from the cable company but recording I read is limited to 2 1/2 hours or less. Which won't work for us. Yes, I realize over the over the air digital would have the same problem, except you can get an ATSC DVR or VCR. Qam dvd/vcr are very hard to find. I am know reconsidering going to the other company. No box needed for the level of service I am wanting.
bad cable
I am tired of bad cable I stay with bad cable more than good.I call sometimes 2 times a day. They are aways on time with a bill but not to fix cable. You need to get a real service person or someone who know about cable. The next step is the channel on tv that helps with these kind of prombles, because you people are robbing us of our hard earned money.
Either no sound and good pic, or sound with fuzzy pic
I have one TV that for months wouldn't play sound for just one channel (WTTW ch 11 from Chicago). Today I added a splitter so that I could add a smaller 2nd tv and use it for sound (pretty sad workaround, I know).
While I was fussing with the cables, I got sound from the 1st TV! I realized that I had switched out one of the cables with a cable I had gotten from Comcast some years ago. Problem now is, I can only get sound when the cable is just barely plugged in (just a few twists) and then the picture is fuzzy. If I screw the cable in all the way to get a good picture, I lose my sound. With the cable screwed in all the way, I have good sound and picture on every other channel.
I have been playing swaptronics all morning, and at this point I have learned that all the white comcast cable behaves this way. My old black ones all have great pictures but no sound no matter how I twist them. I even cut the ends off of one of the white ones and put on new ends. It acts the same way.
Can someone give me any help? I think my next step will be to buy a brand new length of high quality cable. It has been some years since I ran cable for a living so I also wanted to know what is the best cable out there right now. Thanks for any advice you can give me!
Additional Info:
-TV: Panasonic PT-52LCX65
-Cable company: WOW (we have a box and basic package but don't use the box)
-Print from white cable: 9900963 F6SSVV (ETL)us CATV 18 AWG
-I did one round of troubleshooting connected directly to the wall, and another round using a splitter with same results. Funny thing... it does not matter if I use a white or black cable to the splitter. But I have to use a white cable to the tv to get sound. WTF?
Thanks for reading!
Question For Cypherstream on a Cable Module?
Cypherstream this a representation of cable module that I have seen in my area that I think is not made by motorola can you possibly figure out who makes these and if it is a bridger.
This is a front view of the module.
one is here on the left side of the pole:

cypherstream they look very similiar to the magnavox amps at the cable tv muesum but updated:

QAM 512/1024
I was looking up some stuff online and I notice that some QAM modulators can output QAM512 and QAM1024. WOW HOLY COW.
Here is one:
http://www.amt.com/images/products/bt_HDE-QAM_SpecSheetL.pdf
Do you think cable will ever evolve past QAM256? I have a hard time thinking so... because all CPE and QAM tuners are designed for QAM64/QAM256. Not to mention the wider SNR margin required for clear transmission of higher order modulation schemes.
So then, why are some devices supporting 512 and 1024 order modulations in QAM? Is there anything out there that can actually receive this type of signal?
Could you theoretically imagine an 1024QAM system with MPEG4? Wow, you could put so much data on the copper wire. No wonder cable operators aren't concerned so much with FTTH PON networks yet.
Service Electric DOCSIS 3.0
just wondering how fast it is in terms of megabits, up/down ?
thanks
