PDFs, Author field, and Check Sums?
Background: I am trying to modify PDF files to load on my Kindle. Many PDFs do not have any data in the Author metadata field. On the Kindle it is aesthetically nicer to have something listed in the Author field.
Acrobat Reader does not give you the power to modify the Author field, but third party PDF programs do -- e.g., I used PDF-Xchange Viewer to modify this. HOWEVER... although Acrobat Reader shows the metadata field is correctly modified, the Kindle still does not display the Author field. So perhaps there are two different Author fields??
As an example, I attached a PDF file that apparently has the Author field as "California DMV", but the Kindle does not display this...
_____________________________
My question is: Can I use a Binary file editor to 'mess with' a PDF file? Can I modify the PDF's metadata with this and will it still work, or is there some kind of Check Sum in the PDF that prevents me from doing that?
Thanks.

[Help] Uninstalling with Revo
When I have to delete a program from my computer, I usually just do it via add/remove programs. However, today while Googling about my problems with the latest OpenOffice update, I saw multiple people advising others to completely delete OO via the Revo Uninstaller and then reinstall the earlier version of OpenOffice.
So I downloaded Revo and started the uninstall process. It did the regular one through Office's uninstaller and now it is asking me which leftover Registry files I want to delete. Revo says that there are over 4000 of them, so my question is, should I be deleting all of them?
[Updated] Parted Magic 6.2
Parted Magic 6.2 was released on June 14
Developer note: quote:It's that time of the month again.
The most noticeable change is Rox now handles the desktop icons and feh displays the desktop wallpaper. These seemed like the best light weight choices in preparation for the new PCManFM when it's released as stable. Parted was upgraded to 3.0, but GParted is still linked against LibParted 2.4 for now. All fonts should look good in Firefox if you use a language other than US English. A few other useful programs were added like ZFS Fuse, Lilo Setup, Rox Filer, and FixParts.
Downloads from the website: http://partedmagic.com/doku.php?id=downloads
Bugs fixed: Ugly fonts in Firefox for locales other than US.
Added programs: feh-1.3.4, rox-filer-2.9, zfs-fuse-0.7.0, firmware-brcm80211-0.30, fixparts-0.7.1
Removed programs: The last bits of ntfs-progs has been removed. NTFS-3G handles ntfs for testdisk now.
The Parted Magic OS employs core programs of GParted and Parted to handle partitioning tasks with ease, while featuring other useful software (e.g. Partimage, TestDisk, Truecrypt, Clonezilla, G4L, SuperGrubDisk, ddrescue, etc
) and an excellent set of info to benefit the user. An extensive collection of file system tools are also included, as Parted Magic supports the following: btrfs, ext2, ext3, ext4, fat16, fat32, hfs, hfs+, jfs, linux-swap, ntfs, reiserfs, reiser4, and xfs. (This is a great tool for Windows users.)
Easily create a bootable USB stick with UNetbootin.
Parted Magic is free and open source software.

Paid software you cant live without?
Just curious, but anyone actually pay for any software that you cant live without? (with the exception of the OS and office suite that is). Seems like there are pretty much oss or free software for almost everything now and the days of shareware seem to be dwindling.
As for myself WinRAR and Image for windows are probably my only applications that I love and have paid for. I have purchased a few apps in the past, but over the years either better free alternatives have arisen or support went extinct.
It just seems as if the free software is as good as the paid software now.
[Updated] EasyBCD 2.1 released
quote:EasyBCD 2.1 and Some Big Changes
Published June 20th, 2011 in NeoSmart Technologies Blog
For all our loving users, readers, and members out there, EasyBCD 2.1 has just been released and is ready for consumption. Freshly baked, tenderly prepared, and lovingly made, it brings the usual host of new features and updates that a new version of EasyBCD usually brings.
But this build of EasyBCD is a little special we focused a lot more on improving the user experience over adding new features. We've fine-tuned every line of text, every button, every icon. We've hidden all we can hide, automated all we can automate, but never at the cost of advanced options; instead, everything is just that much smarter and more intelligent, cutting out the extra steps that left room for confusion. Simply put, EasyBCD 2.1 is all about smoothing out the edges of what has become the world's most popular bootloader utility.
With EasyBCD 2.1 also comes some exciting changes from the developmental side of things. As you all may or may not know, development at NeoSmart Technologies has largely been a one-man show, with Mahmoud doing the coding and research, with help from an amazing team of moderators (chief of which are Terry, Justin, and Peter) providing most of the ever-important tech suport on our forums. What most people don't know is that while NeoSmart Technologies has, alhamdulilah, reached epic heights over the past few years, it's being run entirely on a part-time basis by all of its volunteers.
As a result of this, development has never been as fast-paced as our users would like and the documentation has somewhat stagnated over the years. We have always had some exciting ideas we wanted to try out, new projects we'd like to share, and guides we'd love to write, but unfortunately as hard-pressed for time as we were, these things just never happened. But we'd like that to change, and we'll soon have people working full-time on NeoSmart projects.
This, combined with what some in the industry have taken to calling the "divide-by-zero" error: a lot of people from big corporations to individual users want to use free software, but have this terrible misconception that because it's free it must be inferior, which as we all know, is simply not the case. There are also other issues involving EasyBCD and commercial use it turns out that while we were publishing EasyBCD under a catch-all free license, some of the components we included in EasyBCD could only be redistributed for personal, non-commercial use; thus putting us and our users in a small dilemma.
The solution that we arrived at after much deliberation was to start a commercial licensing program for EasyBCD. Now, we need to say loud and clear: EasyBCD has always been and will always be free for personal use. We hate developers that turn on their own users, preying on their loyalty and support, forcing them to fork out money for software that's always been free.
That said, as of EasyBCD 2.1, companies and individuals using EasyBCD in commercial settings, as a part of a commercial package, etc. will need to obtain a commercial license. Commercial licenses are currently priced at $24.95 a seat (flexibly defined as per-user or per-machine, your call) with volume licensing available at reduced rates. Simply, if you're using EasyBCD to make money, you can help invest in making it a better product for yourself and everyone.
Licensed EasyBCD users are given priority support, with the option of discussing custom deployment and/or product customization options. All EasyBCD licenses are lifetime licenses, future updates and releases forever included. We hope you will all stand by us during this transition, and we look forward to bringing new and exciting products to bear in the near future.
Major new features:
EasyBCD setup detects missing or out-of-date .NET 2.0 pre-requirement, and automatically installs.
New options to boot from hard disk or floppy images. No longer just VHDs, raw disk images now work too!
Much-improved BCD parsing methodology that works even when bcdedit doesn't!
Intelligent external BCD handling. Automatically determines drive settings, and warns if entries aren't portable as created.
Added a "No Timeout" option of the boot menu, wherein the selection screen will hang until a selection is made.
As usual, EasyBCD now features improved and more-resilient support for even more Linux configurations.
A complete list of changes can be found in the full changelog.

Latest Iron - drawing problems
I don't know that was changed in the latest version of the Iron (v.12.0.750.0), but I've noticed, that time to time it may show some parts of non-client area of applications behind its window. Perhaps in pursuing a speed or something else, developers added some code, that doesn't play Windows rules properly and, as a result, can't handle drawing of its client area correctly.
Here is an example of what I can time to time catch on my screen. I purposely put a small window of Notepad behind the Iron and captured couple of pictures. You can see parts of Notepad's frame (its non-client area) over the Iron's window.
[att=1]
[att=2]
The defect is occurring with the latest version of Iron only (no other applications ever show that) and it disappears promptly, if I click mouse anywhere (making it hard to catch and document).
Obviously Chrome/Iron developers start using non documented tricks, that shoot them in the foot here.
Another weird thing I've noticed is that they draw their non-client area of Iron window badly too, so when I put focus on the Iron application by clicking on its former title bar (sorry, but they have removed title from the former title bar and now I don't know how to call it) time to time I may catch an old title bar for a fraction of a second that is immediately replaced by the blue top of the Iron's window...
I'm reporting this with a hope that some day they'll start do it correctly...

quicken 2000 to quicken 2011
I've been using Quicken 2000 forever - does what I want, no need to change.
But now I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and the cheap-ass 16 bit installer won't run. I'm considering just paying Intuit some money for a more recent version, but it's absolutely imperative I be able to import old data files. Anyone had any experience with this?
I've heard bad things around the net, and I don't want to buy the software and have it not work.
Alternatives I might consider: 'XP mode' (assuming it also emulates 16-bit mode), some nasty hand-installation attempt (how hard can it be? ;-), or switching to some other software.
Any recommendations for the last one? Absolutely MUST BE locally-installed, no web apps wanted, thanks.
[Chrome] How do I switch themes or uninstall one?
I'm using Iron and I can't see where the themes download to or how to switch from one to another or how to uninstall a theme. I think the themes I downloaded are only partially working because the last one (I can't find the others I downloaded) has the right colors but the tabs look like the theme I was first using for Iron (Mulberry...I don't know how to switch back to it either much less use any others I downloaded). Maybe I should ask this on the Iron forum but I know some here are using Iron rather than Chrome.

[Chrome] New tab opens thumbnails and ADS! How to turn off?
In the latest Iron/Chrome, is there any way to turn off those extremely distracting thumbnails that show up when you click on a new blank tab? I have never seen a browser not give a blank page when you click on new tab. I want a BLANK page like every other browser I have ever used gives me. (Opera tried to do something dumb like this several versions back but it was easy to kill that in Opera and a get a blank page when a new tab is clicked on).
I now know why Chrome does it. There is ADVERTISING on that new tab page also but not every time you open a new blank tab (or what should be a new blank tab but instead is a bunch of thumbnails). No other browser that I have ever used felt a need to ADVERTISE when I clicked on a new tab. Since this is Iron version you'd think they would have gotten rid of the ads and those irrelevant thumbnails when you want a blank page. (Fx 4 advertises when you try to go addons site but that is the only time I've seen it do it and that is when you go from the extensions page not if you click on "new blank tab" and then go).
Between this lack of blank tab when clicking on new tab, gif animation in some places (like the logo for this forum), no builtin Flash, and still no way to choose my link colors except by using an extension that really makes this site ugly looking....well....I won't be using Iron hardly.
